10 Most Notorious Stone Cold Steve Austin Urban Legends

9. He Was Scheduled To Win WWE Title At Final Four 1997 PPV

Story: The WWE Final Four PPV in February 1997 was originally supposed to determine the #1 contender to the WWE Title after the controversial finish at that year's Royal Rumble where Austin was eliminated, but none of the refs saw it so he tossed out three others. Instead of being a #1 contender match, it was a WWE Title match since Shawn Michaels relinquished the title. Bret Hart ended up winning the Final Four match (basically a long battle royal) after Austin tried to interfere. During that match, Austin suffered a knee injury. The next night on Raw, Sid beat Hart for the WWE Title and Austin faced Hart at WrestleMania 13 that year, which is one of the best matches ever. We're not sure where the rumor started, but people thought Austin was supposed to go over in the match and they changed it because he wasn't able to continue. After all, what was the point of a one day title reign for Hart? The whole thing was a messed up situation because of what happened with Michaels and WWE likely wasn't sure what they were doing with the major angles at that point. Why People Believe It: The one day reign for Hart was weird, so people bought into that idea about Austin as a one day WWE Champion. Should We Believe It: No. There's really no proof of it. Considering how much Hart and Austin have talked about things in their careers and neither has really mentioned any of this, it's probably not true. Things probably went as planned although as mentioned that whole period was messed up thanks to Michaels.
