7. He Refused To Work A Program With Jeff Jarrett In 1999

Story: Austin was the top guy in WWE for all of 1998 and 1999. There's no question about that. At one point, it was pitched to him that he should have a feud with Jarrett. At the time, Jarrett was a heel in the midcard that was usually around the IC Title level whether he was holding it or not. He also had Debra as his manager, who Austin started dating in the summer of 1999 and he eventually married her. The story goes that Austin refused to get into a feud with Jarrett. However, there were instances where Austin ran down to the ring and hit random Stunners on Jarrett, although they had no matches during that time period. Why did he refuse? Apparently Jarrett made some smartass comment about Austin's merchandise that must have upset him to the point that he totally refused to work with him. There are also stories that Austin had trouble with Jeff's dad Jerry as a promoter before he made it to WWE. It may have had something to do with Debra being there too although that was never brought up. Jarrett did explain his side of it on a TNA DVD that was released years later: €œMy first night out on TV, I made a promo by design and I said, €˜I€™m going to say in this day in age, Austin 3:16 is blasphemous.€™ Did the promo, Austin went ballistic, got nuts, got right in my face. Shawn Michaels was right there when I came through the curtain.€ Why People Believe It: The fact that they never feuded or even had a match during Austin's hottest period makes people think that it's true. Should We Believe It: Yes we should. Austin had the power to say no to a feud if he wanted to and that's apparently what happened with Jarrett.
