6. He Wasn't Able To Forgive Owen Hart For SummerSlam 1997 Injury

Story: Owen Hart was in a match with Steve Austin for the IC Title at SummerSlam 1997. Austin was booked to win the match because he was the babyface star on the rise and if he didn't win, he had to kiss Owen's ass. During the match, Owen hit a Tombstone piledriver on him where he dropped to his butt instead of his knees and Austin's head ended up hitting the mat hard. That bump led to a serious neck injury that shortened Austin's career. In Austin's book, he talked about how he wanted Owen to go to his knees for the move like The Undertaker does. When Owen gave a joke reply, he figured he would do the move right. Instead, he went to his butt and that's why he messed it up. Less than two years later, Owen died after falling from the rafters doing an unnecessary stunt. There are all kinds of stories that the two men really didn't get along after this. Part of the reason that Steve was mad at Owen is because he barely checked on him after the accident. Owen should have called him although from Owen's standpoint he probably felt terrible about it and didn't really know how to address it.

When Owen died, a lot of wrestlers spoke about him on Raw the next day. Austin didn't. He just left a beer can in the ring to salute his co-worker that passed away. Why People Believe It: Owen hurt Steve during a match, so it's understandable that there were some problems between them from Steve's point of view. Should We Believe It: Any time somebody gets hurt in a match, they are going to be upset about the injury. However, people shouldn't think that Steve hated him or anything like that. The injury sucked. At the end of the day, Steve still had a great career. Owen's death was very tragic and most likely whatever ill will Steve had is gone because of what happened to Owen. It's a shame they were not able to mend those fences.
