2. Jake Roberts Snake Bites Randy Savage (1991)
After spending four years as one of the top babyfaces in the company, 1991 saw Jake The Snake Roberts revert to his preferred role as a heel when he turned on The Ultimate Warrior and joined forces with The Undertaker. Following on from this, Roberts sabotaged the wedding reception of Randy Savage and Miss Elizabeth after SummerSlam 91, beginning a feud with the now-retired Macho Man. Roberts made an excellent heel. His intense, quiet and cerebral promos were clearly an inspiration for Bray Wyatt in todays WWE. Knowing full well that Savage was unable to wrestle after losing a retirement bout earlier that year to The Ultimate Warrior at WrestleMania VII, Roberts was the classy cowardly heel, feeling safe by hiding behind the retirement stipulation. On an episode of Superstars of Wrestling, Roberts eventually provoked Savage into entering the ring. As a referee grabbed his leg in an attempt to stop him entering, Roberts pounced, ever the opportunistic heel. He then tied Savage up in the ropes and took his king cobra from out of its bag. After waving the snake near Savages face, the cobra sank its teeth into his left bicep, which was trapped between the ropes. A shrieking Miss Elizabeth ran to the ring while Roberts beat down officials trying to rescue the stricken Savage. Roberts finally released Savage, who flailed around in the ring before being taken away by officials, as commentator Vince McMahon declared, This was not supposed to happen! WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQr1tRpogIo This angle cemented Roberts reputation as one of the most evil and scheming heels in WWE history. This angle also provided a reason for Savage to be reinstated as an active wrestler, and he went on to embark on an intense feud with Roberts. Roberts left the WWF the next year and went on to create havoc in WCW and riots in Mexico.
