8. Orlando Jordan's New Character

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKvi82-oq68 The hiring of Orlando Jordan was a bit of an odd decision on TNA's part. They picked him up at the same time that guys like Hulk Hogan, Scott Hall and Mr. Anderson were coming into the company. Jordan was a mid-carder in WWE who didn't seem to posses a lot of in-ring talent or show much charisma. But, he did work in WWE, so that was good enough for Dixie Carter. Jordan's first night in he defeated Samoa Joe, which was a highly questionable decision. Anyway, upon his debut, his character was virtually the same as it was in WWE. Then it became drastically different. In real life, Jordan is a bi-sexual man, and he wanted to portray one on TV. An openly bi-sexual character was a very progressive thought, and if handled right could have been groundbreaking. But since this was professional wrestling, and a bunch of immature people were in creative, they turned him into a villain and turned his sexuality up to 11. Jordan debuted a new talk show the "O Zone" where he was lowered into the ring wearing police tape and not much else. He played up his flamboyance to rile up the crowd, but they largely saw through the act as a cheap way of trying to get heat. His target was Rob Terry, whom he'd developed a crush on, but Terry didn't return those feelings. After that feud ended, Jordan teamed up with Eric Young, whom he also tried repeatedly to have sexual relations with for "comedic" effect. Apparently, Jordan had pitched this character to WWE creative a couple years before, they rightfully declined. TNA was not so wise, and only further portrayed stereotypes that had plagued the business for so long.

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
