10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Chris Benoit

10. The Epic 2002 No Mercy Tag Title Match

The Smackdown brand was amazing in late 2002 with Paul Heyman as the main booker. Brock Lesnar was the young WWE Champion feuding with The Undertaker and six guys were known as "The Smackdown Six" because of the great matches they had on a weekly basis. The six wrestlers were Benoit, Kurt Angle, Edge, Eddie Guerrero, Rey Mysterio and Chavo Guerrero. At the October No Mercy 2002 PPV event, Benoit and Angle faced off with Edge and Mysterio to crown the first ever tag team champions on the Smackdown brand. The match was a perfect example of what great tag team wrestling is. The babyfaces (Edge & Mysterio) were isolated form each other for a long period of time while the dysfunctional Angle/Benoit team were dominant for much of it. There were crazy breakup moves with guys getting out of submissions and then a killer tag team move where Mysterio did a moonsault off Edge's shoulders. Angle made Edge tap out with the ankle lock for the win.
If you've seen the match then you know how amazing it was. It's an example of time and place being so important. If that match took place at a WrestleMania or SummerSlam it would be celebrated as one of the biggest and best matches ever. Because it was No Mercy, maybe it's not remembered as well. Of course because of Benoit it's forgotten now. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xz6sw9_kurt-angle-and-chris-benoit-vs-rey-mysterio-and-edge-no-mercy-2002-tag-team-match-to-crown-the-first_sport It was a match that I called the greatest tag team match in WWE history and definitely the best match in WWE that year. Today it's completely ignored by WWE due to Benoit's involvement.
