9. Quite The Athlete Back In The Day…
Though he’s since made his name behind the commentary table,
previously JR had found himself right in the thick of the action as a keen
sportsman during his earlier days.
During high school, he played basketball, baseball, and football, appearing as a first baseman for the Westville High baseball team, and also becoming a two-time all-conference football player for the Westville Yellowjackets.
On top of all that, per the ever-trusty Wikipedia, he was President of the Student Body, a 4-year letterman in basketball, State Vice President of the Future Farmers of America (where he was State Speech Champion in 1968), and he was also named Honourable Mention on the 1969 High School All State Football team by the Tulsa World as a centre. Phew.
With that much on his plate, it’s no wonder he’d have to wait until college to make his move into announcing, gaining some experience on college radio before making his way into wrestling.
