Balor’s “Demon” persona has become his NXT trademark. A striking visual on its first appearance at NXT TakeOver: R Evolution back in 2014, the Demon has taken many forms over the past few years (from Jack the Ripper in London to a chainsaw-wielding Leatherface at TakeOver: Dallas), and is now considered a key component of the Finn Balor character.

The Demon represents the darkness within Finn Balor. When it comes crawling down the ramp, you know things are about to get serious, and Balor has only ever lost once when decked-out in his signature body paint.

As synonymous as Balor and his Demon have become with each other, however, Finn has been using body paint across Europe and Japan for a long, long time. Presenting himself as The Joker, Spawn, Freddy Krueger, and a host of others over the years, Balor’s paint is an extension of his own personality and pushes his artistic creativity to the forefront.

Balor was reportedly surprised when WWE let him use the paint in NXT in the first place, and while there’s little chance they’ll ever deviate far from the “Demon” template, it’s heartening to see such individuality in the world’s biggest, most micro-managed promotion.
