10 Times CM Punk Disrespected WWE

9. That Ceremony, That Face

John Cena Randy Orton WWE World Heavyweight Championship Ascension Ceremony

The WWE Championship Ascension Ceremony was WWE at its most cringe-worthy. Here the company was, trying to sell its own audience on the idea that John Cena and Randy Orton were two of the greatest of all time, that their rivalry was genuinely iconic, and a forthcoming unification match between the two was going to be a bout to define a generation. It didn’t work; the crowd was more interested in chanting for Daniel Bryan.

The ceremony is largely remembered for being proof beyond all doubt that Bryan was the most popular star in the company, but it is also remembered for a classic piece of CM Punk rebellion, proving that he was able to voice his displeasure without a single word escaping from his larynx.

As Stephanie McMahon was waxing lyrical about the championship-winning exploits of her husband Triple H, the camera was lucky enough to pick up a CM Punk who could not keep his face straight. He breaks into a resigned chuckle, before covering his face with his hand. To compound the disrespect shown, Punk went on to pull the earpiece out of John Cone’s ear.

The entire segment was an exercise in CM Punk-style frustration. Looking back now, it is easy to see that the Voice of the Voiceless had all but given up on the company. Punk had checked out.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
