10 Times WWE Got The Royal Rumble Main Event Wrong
8. Royal Rumble 2017
Randy Orton: Two-Time Royal Rumble Winner actually sounds about right. Whatever his foibles, the Viper is clearly a top tier star who deserves most of the opportunities that have come his way over his lengthy WWE tenure.
But 2017 was perhaps not the right time. Orton was only peripherally involved in the SmackDown main event scene after the return of the brand extension, his highlight of the previous year being the time he got his head cracked open by Brock Lesnar.
There was some intrigue growing around his storyline with Bray Wyatt, to be fair, but was that not more to do with the Eater of Worlds, who seemed finally to be on the cusp of the main event, than Orton himself?
Ultimately, he went on to accomplish very little during the rest of the year. After winning the title from his former leader at WrestleMania, he held it for all of a month before losing three matches on the spin to Jinder Mahal. It wasn't a great 12 months for him, and someone else could have used this spot instead.
