10 Times WWE Threw Money Down The Drain
5. Stephanie McMahon Chooses Triple H
For all his faults in the decade and a half since, Triple H was on top of wrestling in 2000. He had developed into one of the very best workers in the entire world, and he and The Rock led the company to its most profitable year ever.
As the year rolled on, The Rock captured the WWE World Championship from "The Game," leaving him without a solid direction. His next feud, however, would prove to be a particularly interesting one, as his on-screen wife, Stephanie McMahon, began managing quickly-rising heel Kurt Angle.
Naturally, this led to tension between Angle and Triple H, and the two men both faced The Rock in a triple threat match for the title at SummerSlam. Stephanie tried to interfere with a belt shot to The Rock, but she accidentally hit Triple H. Later in the bout, HHH accidentally hit Stephanie with a sledgehammer, and it was Angle who carried her to the back.
If that didn't put enough of a strain on the billion-dollar marriage, Angle soon took it upon himself to confess romantic feelings to Stephanie and even kiss her. Fans got heavily invested in the storyline, expecting to see Stephanie leave Triple H for Angle and "The Game" become a huge babyface. Instead, when they faced off at Unforgiven, Stephanie helped HHH win and the entire storyline was dropped.
Reportedly, it was Triple H who didn't want Stephanie to end up with Angle. Whether it was because he didn't want to turn face or because he didn't want to jeopardize his fledgling relationship with Stephanie by letting it unravel on TV is anyone's guess.
