10 Times WWE Threw Their Champion Under The Bus

1. Bret Hart & Yokozuna (WrestleMania IX)

WWE really excelled themselves with this one, arguably sacrificing two champions on the altar of Hulkamania in quick succession. It was champion Bret 'Hitman' Hart squaring off against challenger Yokozuna, a fresh main event with new stars after years of Hogan, Warrior, Savage et al, and unusually for Wrestlemania, it appeared that the crowd would not be going home happy. Hart had Yoko in the Sharpshooter, but lost his hold and the match when Mr. Fuji intervened, throwing salt in the eyes of the Hitman. Yoko made the pin, and Wrestlemania was about to end with a heel champion. That was, until Hulk Hogan arrived ringside to check on his 'friend', Bret Hart. Because all faces were best pals back in those days, y'know. Fuji challenged Hogan to step into the ring with Yokozuna, and all of a sudden, everything was about Hulk Hogan once more. Neither Bret nor Yoko were going to get their Wrestlemania moment; that went, once again, to Hogan. Fuji threw salt into Yoko's eyes by mistake, and Hogan hit the legdrop to give us a new (old) champion. So much for building for the future. Hogan, for his part, worked the crowd brilliantly with his expressions, his delight at being champion again putting over just how important the title was to him. Bret and Yoko, however, had been thrown in the dumpster. All because WWE lacked the grapefruits to let go of the past and the sure-fire draw that was Hogan.

As a long-time WWE fan, I have always enjoyed watching men pretend to beat each other up while wearing spandex. Extra points for facepaint, none for tassels. I love all things sci-fi. If there's a 'Star' somewhere in the title, I'll probably dig it. I'm a huge football fan too. For my sins, I support Manchester United.
