10 Underwhelming Wrestlers Who Held Legendary Titles.
1. Tommy Rich
Two questions have long surrounded the career of Tommy 'Wildfire' Rich.
Firstly, how Jim Barnett pulled off putting the most prestigious title in wrestling on Rich for less than a week. And secondly, how Tommy was considered a sex symbol in Georgia - or anywhere in the cosmos.
From 1979-1981, Tommy Rich was the hottest southern territory babyface in the business. A cross-state draw, 'Wildfire' was primed for a top national spot with the NWA.
Barnett, seeking to boost gates in his Georgia Championship Wrestling promotion, brokered an unlikely deal with the NWA to have champion Harley Race drop the title to Rich in Georgia and regain it four days later.
Rich's win was intended not only to increase attendance but to establish Rich as a headline attraction and burnish his popularity nationwide.
Despite being a significant draw in the immediate years following his victory, Rich was unable to build on his title win, nor maintain the popularity he once garnered.
Jumping from territory to territory throughout the '80s and '90s, Rich became a nostalgia act- an aging teeny bopper with a one hit wonder.
Years after dropping the 10lbs of gold, Rich finished up his national wrestling career in ECW as 10lbs of s**t in a 5lb bag.
