10 Worst Excuses For Losing A Fight

3. Andy Ruiz Jr. - Under-training And Partying

It's pretty hard to hate on Andy Ruiz Jr.

He shocked the entire world when he managed to spark out Anthony Joshua inside of Madison Square Gardens and win the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO and IBO heavyweight titles back in 2019. With that level of fame suddenly thrust onto his shoulders, it would be tough for anyone to stay grounded and level-headed, I suppose.

Ruiz Jr. openly admitted to buying his mother a new car and thoroughly enjoying the spoils he had received from usurping King Joshua. However, by the time that Joshua/Ruiz Jr. II came around, that new luxurious lifestyle may have become slightly detrimental to his preparations.

Eventually losing the rematch - along with his newly won Heavyweight titles - Ruiz Jr. confessed that 'three months of partying, celebrating, affected me. What can I say.?'

Yes, it was admirably honest of the unexpected sensation to admit this, but that doesn't make it in any way an acceptable excuse.

He was being paid to fight and nonchalantly spoke of how he had put on too much weight in the interim between the two clashes thanks to his over-indulgence. This poor excuse threatened to dampen the feat that was Joshua coming back from adversity to reclaim his beloved titles and also took a bit of the shine off of the character that was the plucky underdog version of Ruiz Jr.
