10 Wrestlers Who Couldn't Hide Their Anger At Doing A Job
5. Drew McIntyre - WWE Clash At The Castle
It probably didn't help that WWE had done such a magnificent job of building Drew McIntyre in the build to Clash At The Castle.
Portrayed as a loving family man with a relentless work ethic, in a lovely video package, WWE basically presented the first UK stadium show in 30 years as his time. He'd made the sacrifices, and he had "his" "people" roaring him over the finish line.
WWE neglected to take into account the rule of three that dominates fiction. Drew had his moment stolen at WrestleMania 36, when he defeated Brock Lesnar at a cursed WrestleMania 36 show that played out in front of no spectators. A year later, he failed to recapture the WWE Championship in a losing effort against Bobby Lashley. Despite the rise of Cody Rhodes, that rule of three bed itself into the consciousness of WWE fans. That, combined with the "hometown" feel-good story, didn't so much indicate as signpost the outcome.
It didn't happen, and while this may be a case of confirmation bias, Drew cast a sullen figure. He fired up as part of his entrance, but prior to the pyro going off, he wore a wry smile and didn't seem to do much to put a game face on.
