Keith Lee began his year basking in glory on NXT. He didn’t have to wait long for championship success. On 22 January, Lee captured the NXT North American Championship defeating Roderick Strong. Mere days later, he competed in his first Royal Rumble.

Lee had impressive title defences against Dominik Dijakovic and Johnny Gargano, which raised his profile significantly. At The Great American Bash, Lee defeated Adam Cole to win the NXT Championship. In doing so he became the first person to hold both championships simultaneously. Lee voluntarily vacated the North American Championship to focus on the brand’s main title. However, he lost his championship during a feud with Karrion Kross. Their NXT TakeOver XXX match was Lee’s last on the yellow brand.

Lee debuted on the Raw after SummerSlam to initial fanfare. Though his change in entrance music and wrestling attire drew the ire of some, Lee’s brief feud with Randy Orton and clean win at Payback were promising. Lee ended 2020 with an unsuccessful title shot against WWE Champion Drew McIntyre.
