Deliberately causing a buzz on social media, WWE teased fans with cryptic tweets last week, before it was revealed on Monday Night Raw that they referenced the return of Bill Goldberg as a playable character in WWE 2K17. Immediately, people started to reason that the WCW star was heading back to the promotion, possibly even for an appearance at WrestleMania 33.

According to The Wrestling Observer, that's not exactly close to happening. The newsletter reported this week that Goldberg's deal was separate from a standard WWE deal, instead solely between the wrestler and video game developers 2K Sports. This means that Goldberg doesn't really have contact with WWE, his dealings are with those making the new game.

That's interesting, because it somewhat distances the star (who spent 2003-2004 with the promotion) from signing a contract to appear physically. There's still a chance of it happening somewhere down the road, obviously, but as of right now Goldberg's contract isn't with Vince McMahon.

This is vaguely similar to The Ultimate Warrior's deal with the company several years ago, and he eventually ended up in the WWE Hall Of Fame.
