10 Wrestling Mysteries That Were Supposed To End Differently

6. Erick Rowan’s Cage

Poor Erick Rowan. Perhaps the most unloved member of the Wyatt Family, after its dissolution he wound up bouncing from one idea to the next and never really stuck with a character for all that long. The Bludgeon Brothers was fun but short lived. He teamed with Daniel Bryan as an environmentalist. He was even a super-genius babyface for a little while.

In November 2019, Rowan started carrying a cage around backstage and even to the ring when he performed. The contents were a secret; all we knew was that whatever it was moved and it would freak other superstars out who dared to take a look under the cloth that covered the cage.

The big reveal was a hysterically bad mechanical spider creature, and you could practically see the embarrassment on Rowan’s face. Five months of build-up fell flat, and to top it off Erick was released a month later.

Speaking on the storyline, Rowan explains that at first even the writer’s room didn’t know what was going to be in the cage, but the idea eventually became a rat. Rowan fixated on this idea, but the WWE went another way and, without telling the performer, crafted the robotic spider. The final effect looked like nothing more than a cheap Halloween prop.
