Firstly, credit where it’s due: Lita and, especially, Kane threw themselves into this angle with commendable gusto. In 2004, the unmasked Big Red Machine became infatuated with his fellow future WWE Hall of Famer. He attempted to secure her, she wasn’t interested, he respected her wishes.

Actually no, he didn’t. He began brutalising Matt Hardy until Lita agreed to sleep with him in order for him to stop. It was then revealed that she was pregnant with Kane’s child, and from there things only got more distasteful. Gene Snitsky got involved, there was a miscarriage angle, and the storyline generally blended serious issues with silly wrestling in the most graceless of manners.

If we were to pinpoint one particularly objectionable moment, it’d be the latter section, with Lita looking broken in a hospital bed having lost the child she conceived with Kane (by means of, essentially, rape, to make matters far worse). Again Lita and Kane played this as well as you could possibly ask them, but WWE didn’t have anywhere near the emotional intelligence required to make this something other than exploitative and grim.
