Coming into WrestleMania XXV, Matt and Jeff Hardy were involved in a rather bitter brotherly feud.

Matt had cost Jeff his WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble, later revealing that he was tired of cleaning up after his brother and living in his shadow. This then lead to him suggesting that he was the person behind a series of accidents the "Charismatic Enigma" had recently been involved in. Along with being the person behind a recent storyline car crash, pyro accident and attack on Jeff in a stairwell, Matt seemed to suggest that he was also the person responsible for the genuine house fire which burnt down Jeff's house a year earlier. A tragedy which resulted in Jeff's dog, Jack, dying in the blaze.

This attempt to merge a legit accident into a WWE storyline just felt like a "shoot" too far as many fans were well aware that the fire was caused by an accident involving some damaged electrical wire. They also simply didn't believe Matt would've or could've pulled off such a despicable act.

Depressingly, this shameless attempt to use Jeff's real-life struggles as a way of ramping up the feud's drama ultimately led to a rather disappointing bout at the Show of Shows.
