10 WWE Success Stories Absolutely NOBODY Saw Coming
9. The Hurricane Soars
Trying to force the funny via slapstick shenanigans and jarring one-liners can become tiresome extremely quickly. However, when the right performer and concept collide, producing comedy wrestling gold can be as simple as slapping on a face mask and plonking yourself next to a Great One.
After taking in the early days of Gregory Helms' time under the WWE banner, though, you'd have been forgiven for assuming the generic "Hollywood" character wasn't exactly set for big things in the company. Thankfully, that uninspired gimmick was soon dropped. But in its place Raw's head writer at the time Brian Gewirtz gifted Helms with the concept of a superhero persona that also didn't exactly scream out mega hit on paper.
However, Gewirtz knew he'd found the right guy to turn his Hurricane idea into one of the most entertaining characters on the roster, with Helms being a huge comic book fan at the time and possessing the natural comic timing to deliver the goods as the delusional crime fighter.
What looked like a recipe for disaster initially soon transformed into one of the most over mid-card acts WWE had to offer, with fans eventually lapping up Helms' commitment to the goofy, catchphrase-spouting, bright green underdog. And the character got so surprisingly popular, that it was only a matter of time before The Rock wanted a piece of the ridiculous super-action, too.
