10 WWE Tag Teams Vince McMahon Actually Loved
1. The New Day
The New Day have in recent years been Vince's team of choice. The charismatic trio has won the chairman over with their hilarious antics - perhaps in part because they are not a traditional two-man team.
Xavier Woods, Kofi Kingston and Big E Langston were originally to be a heel faction. The group would be more akin to The Nation of Domination than the fun-loving superstars we know today. Realising the angle might not be suitable for the modern era of WWE, the idea was scrapped. The team would instead be The New Day - a happy-clappy positivity pedalling trio.
Despite the preachy babyface persona initially failing to connect with WWE fans, WWE management had faith in the group. The New Day would soon achieve gold winning the WWE Tag Team Championship turning heel in the process.
Woods, Kingston and Big E would defend the titles under the Freebird rule, meaning all three members were recognised as champions. This coupled with the chemistry the three shared created intrigue.
Realising he was sitting on a potential merchandise gold mine, Vince turned The New Day face pushing the act even harder. At the height of his powers, Xavier Woods even managed to make a star of his trombone ’Francesca’.
Vince rewarded his team with a staggering 483-day reign as champions. This saw the team overtake Demolition as the longest reigning champions of all time.
After four years at the top, rumours persist that the three talented stars will move onto singles runs. No matter what lies ahead, one thing is for sure: together these cheeky scamps have won the chairman’s heart.
