16 Things We Learned From Mark Henry On Talk Is Jericho
5. The Fake Retirement Speech
The host then brings up the amazing promo from 2013 where Mark Henry worked the entire fan base perfectly and had the majority of them - along with the wrestling media - convince he was going to retire. He gave a tear-filled heartfelt speech that concluded with him attacking John Cena and declaring his intent to challenge for the WWE championship, the only belt he'd never held. It was an outstanding segment and one of the best things WWE has done in recent times. Mark says the emotion in the promo was real because he had been thinking and still does think about retirement and knows it's coming to an end. He says that the things he says were his legitimate feelings, and was speaking from the heart. He adds that the downside is now he'll never get to do another retirement speech because no one will buy it. Henry does admit that the angle came from the fact that he was actually trying to hang it up at the time, but Vince talked him into staying and then turned it into a storyline.
