2 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE NXT UK (10 June)
1. Always End On A Banger
Kay Lee Ray’s NXT UK Women’s Championship reign was only ever going to end in an all-time classic, hence why she and Meiko Satomura were given adequate time for their main event title switch.
A complete change from their first outing, Ray and Satomura beat the sh*t out of each other, complete with a Death Valley Driver on the ringside mats and a Gory Bomb on the ring apron. This match needed those sorts of big(ish) spots to get its point across.
In one match, WWE established Meiko as the legitimate ‘Final Boss’ they’ve proclaimed her as. A series of seriously stiff Superkicks, a Swanton Bomb, and a few Gory Bombs all saw Meiko rise back to her feet, ready for the next blow. She didn’t need to be acknowledged like this, mind, but it certainly helped.
A Scorpio Rising ended Kay Lee’s run as ‘The Forever Champion’ at 649 days. Granted, this would have went down a treat in front of a live audience, but it still had its purpose nonetheless. The added touch of streamers – a staple of Japanese wrestling – made Satomura’s title win all that more heartfelt.
She doesn’t quite have the aura she once held a few years ago, but by God, Meiko Satomura is still capable of a banger.
