4 Ups And Downs From Last Night's WWE Smackdown (Jan 29)
1. John Cena Did A Promo About Boobs And Pubes
Yes you read that right. Boobs and pubes. The first interaction between John Cena and Rusev wasn't about how Cena was some American hero that was sick of the Russian guy ripping on America. Oh no. It was about making jokes with Cena telling Rusev that when he was US Champion in 2005 it was when Rusev didn't have pubes and Lana didn't have boobs. That line drew a reaction because it's an easy pop. That's not the kind of thing that is going to interest people that much, though. Rusev started the promo on the right note by ranting about Cena. He did a good job with it actually. The problem was Cena's response really wasn't the right way to respond to it. He started off on the right note with the right kind of intensity, but it didn't last. There was also a point in Cena's promo where he said Rusev was undefeated. That's not true. He's lost by disqualification and countout. Even last week on Smackdown he lost by countout to Ryback. Rusev has never been pinned or submitted, though. This was just another example of WWE's writing team overcomplicating things. All they need to do is have Cena be pro-American and have a problem with Rusev because of the disparaging tings he says about the US with Lana. Instead, we get pubes and boobs jokes. Keep the feud simple. It's not a bad idea. Their match at Fast Lane is a big deal for both guys. The intense part of the promos were fine. The jokes failed. Stick with the intensity going forward.
