This week sees a celebration of forty years of the WWE Intercontinental Championship.

Pat Patterson made history back in September 1979, winning a tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to be named the inaugural champion, and forty years on it's truly incredible to think of the names who have held the title.

Generally considered to be a stepping stone to greatness, the IC belt has been worn by the likes of The Rock, Chris Jericho, Edge, Jeff Hardy, and the legend that is Macho Man Randy Savage.

At the time of writing, it's changed hands 172 times in unforgettable encounters on some of the grandest stages of them all.

Nevertheless what is the best Intercontinental Championship match of all time? Is Mr Perfect versus Bret Hart in a technical masterpiece at SummerSlam '91 worthy of the top spot? Could Shawn Michaels and Razor Ramon claim #1? Where does Hulk Hogan against The Ultimate Warrior fit in all this?!

At the end of the day it comes down to personal preference, but here is what I consider to be the 40 Best WWE Intercontinental Championship Matches Ever...
