Last year, WWE held its first Mae Young Classic, a tournament that produced a mixed bag of impressive matches and disappointing contests. It set a bar, but one that this year’s affair should be able to clear easily.

Things already are off to a better start, as Wednesday’s first matches provided solid action for the hour and introduced us to some of the new faces who will be joining WWE’s ranks. The first episode breezed by, as the matches ranged from serviceable to pretty good, without any down moments.

We saw the WWE debuts of Tegan Nox and Meiko Satomura, which alone makes this a must-see episode. We saw a newcomer captivate the Full Sail University crowd with a dizzying array of aerial maneuvers while trying to chop down a mountain of a woman. We saw two NXT signees battle it out in a pretty good match that featured completely different personalities.

Most importantly, we saw a solid wrestling program that would hold up against a lot of the in-ring product we see on WWE TV today. Satomura versus Killer Kelly in particular was a must-see match.

A quick note: While the vast majority of the tournament has already been taped, we’re trying to avoid spoilers of future rounds as best as possible, so as to not color these items with information of what “hasn’t happened yet.”

Let’s get to it…
