4. Flavor Of The Month Works Fine

Let’s level here: Not every challenger for a title needs to be built up and every match an epic. Sometimes, just having a challenger of the month will do the job.

In the case of the SmackDown Women’s Championship, see Exhibit C: Carmella.

No one was seriously expecting Carmella to dethrone Sasha Banks Sunday night, though they gave her a nice build by having her injure the champ’s back (See? Pre-match attacks targeting one body part!) and allegedly get inside Sasha’s head. The match itself was fine – Carmella isn’t going to deliver a four-star classic, but she’s capable of keeping up and putting together a more than competent match.

The two traded rollups and submission attempts, and Carmella’s sommelier got involved, keeping ‘Mella in the match. But Banks pulled out the win via Banks Statement, allowing her to continue having a proper title run.
