For all the pageantry, drama and promise that a WrestleMania brings, and for all the talent, technological know-how and near-limitless resources WWE has at its discretion, there really is no excuse for the company putting on a lackluster Showcase of the Immortals. The floor should be raised tremendously for Mania, rather than giving WWE its flowers for mere competence.

Heading into WrestleMania 40, Saturday’s card seemed to be the one with more potential for greatness. The two singles title matches, main event and lucha tag match all looked great on paper, and the six-team ladder match had all the makings of a show-stealer.

What we got was a good, but not great, first night, though the overall final score could be tweaked depending on what happens Sunday night, particularly with the two men’s world title matches. A wonderful opener, a tremendous sub-main event, and a dramatic and tension-filled finish to the main event made this an easily enjoyable show, but it was far from a classic.

There were some turkeys here, and other moments that didn’t quite live up to their billing. Overall though, this was a good offering that delivered on most of its promises and didn’t raise any red flags.

Let’s get to it…
