6 Ups & 6 Downs From WWE SummerSlam 2020

2. A Legit Surprise Return

The Fiend didn’t have time to celebrate his WWE Universal Championship victory Sunday night, as he was immediately attacked.

Roman Reigns returned at the conclusion of SummerSlam, spearing Fiend and Braun Strowman, then laying waste to the former champ and spearing Bray Wyatt again. Reigns was last seen in WWE more than five months ago, when he basically opted out of the company as the global pandemic shut stuff down. Roman had been plugged into a Universal Championship match against Goldberg, but Strowman was inserted once Reigns bowed out.

SmackDown definitely could use some star power at the top, and Fiend will need a top star to feud with, so this could be interesting. Of course, we’ll give it a week or two before complaining about Roman being away for five-plus months and immediately being inserted into the main event scene, but let’s face it: WWE needs some star power to jolt things, and Reigns was about as big a star as the company had on the fulltime roster.

Prediction: By October, we’re griping about having Roman rammed down our throats. At least WWE can control the crowd response this time around!
