Rumours of The Undertaker’s seemingly imminent retirement always surface at this time of year, but they’re particularly loud ahead of WrestleMania 33. The Deadman is in a bad way, and there’s a very real chance that his forthcoming battle with Roman Reigns could be his last.
Taker has been struggling with hip problems since undergoing surgery last year, and was photographed using crutches in October. He looked slow, sluggish, and out of shape while competing in the Royal Rumble, and backstage reports suggested he was visibly struggling after taking Reigns’ Spear on last week’s Raw. Furthermore, Undertaker reportedly needs full-on hip replacement surgery, and when he gets it, doctors will force him into retirement.
If The Deadman is in as much pain as the evidence suggests, this is probably the end. He has more than earned the right to retire on his own terms, and while it’s easy to shoot rumours like this down, WWE officials are reportedly planning for a future without WrestleMania’s biggest star.
Even if he doesn’t retire, Taker will almost certainly vanish for a few months at the very least after competing in Orlando. These are his career’s dying days, and while fans still dream of The Undertaker vs. John Cena at WrestleMania 34, the match looks increasingly unlikely.
