7 Reasons Why Steve Austin Was A Bigger Star Than Hulk Hogan

3. Hogan Had a Repetitive Promo Style While Austin Was Much More Creative

If you've seen one Hogan promo you've seen them all. A big reason why his heel turn at Bash at the Beach 1996 worked was because he did the same promo for 12 years before that. To hear him say something else was such a welcome change. There were so many "well you know something brother" promos along with all the talks about the training, the prayers and vitamins that it got boring. His famous ending was a classic when he would say "What'cha gonna do when Hulkamania runs wild on you." When Austin did his promos the audience was riveted by what he might say. He was a loose cannon in many ways, just like his former tag team partner Brian Pillman. There were times later in his career when he would make jokes and do the "what" thing in 2001, but if you're talking about 1996 to 2000 version of Austin he was as intense as anybody in the history of the business. Austin was known for being good in the ring although it was his microphone work that really got him over as the star. He was smart enough to push the limits by using words we weren't used to seeing and because of his success as an aggressive character, people will always try to copy him. They won't be able to duplicate it because there was only one Stone Cold. Of course he had a catchphrase when he ended his promos with "and that's the bottom like cuz Stone Cold said so" and that's no different than anybody else in wrestling. However, he didn't rely on them as much as Hogan did. Regarding the "what" phrase, it needs to be stated that it got over because it was Austin doing it. Maybe The Rock could have made it popular too, but when fans saw Austin doing it they wanted to join in. That's some very impressive star power when you can get a regular four letter word over as a catchphrase.
