8 Best WCW Cruiserweight Championship Matches
1. Eddie Guerrero Vs. Rey Mysterio - Halloween Havoc 1997
Eddie Guerrero had a long and memorable rivalry in WWE in 2005, but their greatest work together took place years prior in WCW. Not discounting their WWE work, but it's fair to say their best WWE bouts didn't quite measure up to the standard they set themselves with the genuine classic at Halloween Havoc '97.
Fought under Mask Vs. Title rules, there was plenty on the line here. Turns out that was also the case in actuality, as Eric Bischoff had originally booked Mysterio to lose the match and his mask, which caused the master of the 619 no shortage of stress. He didn't want to do it and had actually planned to no-show the event.
Then, mere minutes before they were due to go out and wrestle, Bischoff informed Rey that he was no longer losing and would in fact be going over. The news lifted a ten-tonne weight of Mysteiro's shoulders and he and Guerrero went out there and produced a five-star masterclass.
Both men are on record as saying there is simply nothing they would change about their performances here, as everything seemed to gel, their crisp and revolutionary moves met with a heartening response by an invested crowd who had never seen such things as a front flip dive over the top rope being turned into a Frankensteiner or a springboard backflip being turned into a DDT.
For the finish, Rey countered a second rope Splash Mountain Bomb into a Frankensteiner for the three. It capped off what had been one of the best North American pro wrestling matches of the year, if not the decade.
