8 Important Wrestling Events That Happened When Great Balls Of Fire Was Released

5. The Fabulous Kangaroos Form

Modern fans have probably never heard of the Fabulous Kangaroos, but Al Costello and Roy Heffernan, along with their manager Wild Red Berry, put tag team wrestling on the map. The woolly Aussies combined technical expertise with grandiose showmanship, inciting riots across North America. They embraced their roots, entering the ring to Waltzing Matilda while donning bush hats and tossing boomerangs to the crowd.

Their first match was in Calgary, Alberta, for promoter Stu Hart, and within weeks, they became headliners. They ran roughshod for about eight years before Heffernan returned to Australia. Costello would keep the team alive by recruiting Ray St. Clair, Don Kent, and other members before finally transitioning to managing The New Fabulous Kangaroos in the 1990s.
