8 Second Generation Wrestlers' Favourite Legacy Matches
1. Cody Rhodes – Dusty Rhodes
Cody is one of the modern era’s biggest stars, both in-ring and backstage. We could linger in a comment section debating viewing figures and the importance of ex-WWE superstars, but AEW has provided a genuine alternative to WWE. Though a lot of attention is focused on Tony Khan’s finances, which are no doubt important, wrestling fans have to give Cody and The Elite credit for the creativity they’ve brought to the promotion. Cody’s lineage as the son of Dusty Rhodes, and life-long involvement in the wrestling business, has given him a distinct advantage.
During a 2020 interview with Republic World, Cody revealed that Dusty Rhodes and Sting vs. Tully Blanchard and Arn Anderson is not just his favourite Dusty match, but his favourite match of all time. Though in the interview Cody dates the match back to 1991 it actually headlined Clash of Champions II: Miami Mayhem on 8 June 1988.
Cody cites the immense crowd response as the reason the match is so beloved to him. Featuring two of the Four Horsemen, and Tye-dye Dusty and Surfer Sting, who look made to team, drew boos and cheers respectively. However, it’s clear how much the NWA fans loved ‘The American Dream’.
