8 Times WWE Tag Team Partners Fought Each Other
1. Shawn Michaels Vs. Marty Jannetty
The real, non-kayfabe story behind the breakup of The Rockers, one of the most exciting tag teams of the 1980s, is more interesting that anything that transpired between the pain onscreen.
According to Marty Jannetty, Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon engineered the breakup from behind-the-scenes. After learning that they were paid significantly less for a commercial shoot than other members of the roster, the !*$%, hard-bumping duo decided to hand their notice in, telling McMahon of their intention to leave.
Vince was fine with saying goodbye to The Rockers, but he wanted to keep HBK, whom he saw as being a future singles star. In the end, the two ended up staying but the split was in motion, with Jannetty's miscommunication leading to Michaels' elimination in a 1991 Survivor Series traditional elimination tag match.
The tension was simmering, so much so that Brutus Beefcake invited them on to his talk show 'The Barber Shop'. We all know what happened next: The Showstopper shocking dropped his partner with Sweet Chin Music before throwing him head-first through the set window.
Michaels and Marty were supposed to feud through to WrestleMania VIII, but Jannetty's six months of house arrest put paid to that. He returned in October 1992, immediately going after Michaels, who was now the Intercontinental Champion. The two men finally met at the 1993 Royal Rumble, with Michaels emerging the winner following what some considered a disappointing match.
The two were set to continue feuding, but Jannetty was released when WWE got suspicious that he was under the influence during the Rumble match. He returned in May, resurrecting the feud with Michaels, with the two having some cracking matches together before parting ways for good (pretty much).
