AEW's Scorpio Sky Ditches Extra TNT Title Belt
Sky announces he will only carry one title, unlike predecessor Sammy Guevara.
Finally, the bewildering caper of why the TNT Champion carried two title belts has mercifully ended.
Scorpio Sky, who won the title from Sammy Guevara on AEW Dynamite Wednesday night, announced via Twitter Friday that he would only carry one of the two titles that Guevara had been toting around. Sammy started carrying two championships in January after winning a title unification match against Cody Rhodes. Then-TNT champ Rhodes was forced to miss a couple weeks, which led to AEW establishing an interim TNT title, which Guevara won.
Two weeks later, Sammy defeated Cody in an incredible ladder match to merge the TNT and interim titles, but he then began carrying both championships around, despite there being only one actual title. It made no sense, and it wasn't like it was some cool fashion statement. Guevara just wore both straps around his waist.
But Wednesday, Sky toppled Sammy and captured the title, then took to Twitter to announce his decision with the extraneous belt.
I will only be carrying one TNT title from now on as I’ve gifted the other to Dan Lambert to put front and center at ATT surrounded by the countless championships won in the UFC, Bellator, and all the other major promotions. The in-storyline decision works well as a simple way to ditch the superfluous title without just tossing it into the trash like Scott Hall with the WCW Television Championship. And it finally ends our long national nightmare that had plagued and confused several fans and critics alike.
