Backstage Notes On WWE's Early WrestleMania 39 Plans

Forget WrestleMania 38, here's what WWE has lined up for 39...

WrestleMania 38 is still two months away, but WWE already has a few ideas in mind for next year's event in Inglewood, California.

Per Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE wants to make WrestleMania 39 the biggest show in the flagship's history. Currently, that means having Roman Reigns vs. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson and Becky Lynch vs. Ronda Rousey on the card.

Both of these are far from certain. Much can (and will) change over the next 14 months, with The Rock's schedule being the most obvious barrier. His match with Reigns remains WWE's biggest money match but while everybody involved seems keen to put it together, Johnson's Hollywood career complicates matters, leaving the match in the balance.

As far as Ronda Rousey goes, her current WWE contract calls for her to work WrestleMania 38 and 39. She is expected to face SmackDown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair at this year's event after winning the 2022 women's Royal Rumble. WWE has been trying to put her and Lynch together one-on-one since Survivor Series 2018, when a planned match was scrapped due to a wayward Nia Jax punch, and Rousey's two-'Mania deal theoretically allows them to hold off for another year.

"Plans change" is an evergreen disclaimer with WWE. Regardless, the promotion has these two matches in mind.
