Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's HBO series premiered last weekend, establishing a world in which the rich, young and talented are just as vulnerable as everybody else in society - perhaps even more so. Episode 1 was an irresponsible romp through the lives of professional NFL stars (and ex-pros), in which The Rock plays Spencer Strasmore - a retired Miami Dolphin and aspiring financial advisor. Although not the deepest or most sophisticated show on television, Ballers is refreshing in its ability to know exactly where it lies. It's a colourful, explosive comedy-drama with a cast of larger-than-life characters - and provides set piece moments in a satisfyingly straightforward manner. Shocking moments come thick and fast from the off, the audience subjected to a car crash, a nightclub toilet sex scene, a fist fight, and two deaths over the course of 30 high-octane minutes. Johnson more than holds his own in his small screen debut, while John David Washington grabs attention as a cocky young pro unable to keep his nose out of trouble.
