One of the advertising points for the second episode of Smackdown Live hyped that AJ Styles had a message for John Cena, and "The Phenomenal One" didn't disappoint. After a heated exchange with "Big Match John," Styles challenged Cena to a one-on-one bout at SummerSlam, and Cena accepted.

The feud between Cena and Styles began on May 30, when John Cena returned to Raw after months off due to injury. After Cena addressed the crowd, Styles came out to the ring to profess his respect for the 15-time world champion. The Club interrupted both men and a tag team showdown appeared to be brewing, but Styles attacked Cena, joining forces with his own friends. The reunited Club laid a beating on "Big Match John."

Cena and Styles clashed at Money in the Bank, locking horns in a match that was supposed to be contested without interference. After more than 20 minutes of great action, though, Styles went back on his word - The Club ran in, attacking Cena and helping Styles gain the win. The next month at Battleground, The Club took on Cena, Enzo Amore, and Big Cass in six-man action, and Cena got a measure of revenge when he pinned Styles.
