In 2016, Chris Jericho marked his return to in-ring competition full-time by participating in the Royal Rumble match. Y2J followed up his amazing performance with a series of “dream matches” with the recently debuted AJ Styles. Those matches proved that Jericho was still one of the best in the world at what he does and still capable of hitting the Codebreaker from out of nowhere.
Jericho later began a feud with Dean Ambrose that featured the creative use of a straitjacket for some (lunatic?) spots. After forming an alliance with Kevin Owens in August 2016, the best friends started to destroy opponents with the Pop-up Codebreaker. The friendship eventually ended, with their match at WrestleMania 33 offering the perfect coda to the storyline.
Y2J’s 2016-17 WWE run is also remembered for The List of Jericho, light-up scarfs, and the “stupid idiot” catchphrase. In 2018, Jericho ditched his wacky Y2J persona for a more sadistic Alpha character when he started competing in NJPW.
