Here's what a CM Punk WWE return MAY have looked like...

CM Punk was open to the prospect of returning to WWE after AEW All Out 2022, with the Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 39 potentially factoring into his plans.

Fightful Select reports, via sources close to Punk, that the 44-year-old was willing to leave AEW in favour of a WWE comeback last December. The Chicagoan sought to compete in the 2023 Royal Rumble, then compete at 'Mania 39, potentially against whoever eliminated him from the Rumble.

WWE sources have indicated that Kevin Owens' name was mentioned for this spot. KO, of course, main-evented 'Mania 39's first night, teaming with Sami Zayn to capture the Raw and SmackDown Tag Team Championships from The Usos.

One source stated, however, that Owens didn't come up in the Punk pitch, though his name had been thrown around backstage.

There is currently no word on whether or not WWE were interested in Punk's proposals, or if AEW was entertaining the idea of letting him. At the time, Punk was serving an indefinite suspension for brawling with Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks after All Out 2022.

AEW released Punk last week, doing so in the wake of his latest backstage incident at All In last month.
