Did WWE Lie To Cain Velasquez?

Or was this some big Rumble-related misunderstanding?

Cain Velasquez SmackDown

The latest edition of The Wrestling Observer newsletter included some interesting speculation on Cain Velasquez and his omission from last Sunday's Royal Rumble pay-per-view.

According to Dave Meltzer's write up, Velasquez was telling the media before the Rumble that he'd be involved because that's what WWE were telling him. Come crunch time though, there were no plans to put the ex-UFC fighter in the 30-man match, or for him to avenge his defeat to Brock Lesnar at last October's Crown Jewel show in Saudi Arabia.

Was this WWE's way of keeping Velasquez keen whilst treating him mean? Or was it a complete misunderstanding and Cain was working the media with his comments? Both are possibilities, even if the latter seems way more professional.

It'd be foolish for WWE to lie to someone like Cain and string him along during such a crucial time of the year. The company probably aren't done with him yet, and could easily book a rematch with Lesnar at the next Saudi show to tide the WWE Champ over before his WrestleMania 36 clash opposite Rumble winner Drew McIntyre.
