Drake Maverick Signs New WWE NXT Contract

Fantasma won the belt, but Maverick still got what he wanted...

Drake Maverick ceremonially signed a new WWE NXT contract on last night's show, closing a controversial storyline that began with the emotional video the seemingly released star put out shortly after his name was included as one of the wrestlers let go by WWE on 15 April.

The ensuing weeks saw Maverick attempt to save his job by winning the Interim NXT Cruiserweight Championship tournament. After earning a place in the finals last week, Drake faced El Hijo del Fantasma for the belt on last night's show. Though he lost, the tearful Maverick was approached by Triple H after the fact, signing the new deal at the top of the ramp.

Whether or not Maverick was actually let go on 15 April isn't clear, though the storyline has been widely (and justifiably) criticised for coming at a time when dozens of others had lost their jobs during a global health crisis, which, as we have learned from WWE's financials, was completely unnecessary in this year of forecasted record profits.

Maverick himself has claimed to have come up with the storyline. Either way, it's over now. Here's hoping Drake's next onscreen narrative isn't as distasteful.
