Survivor Series turns 30 this weekend, so what better time to revisit the past?
Whilst it may be the fourth of the so-called Big Four in 2016, Survivor Series is the second longest running WWE event after WrestleMania. You've got to go all the way back to 1987 to find the first, a show put together off the back of WrestleMania III's success, and one of the first signs that Vince McMahon was serious about establishing a wrestling monopoly.
Survivor Series 1987 aired the same night as NWA's Starrcade '87, and cable providers were given a choice between the two for their pro wrestling Thanksgiving extravaganza. Threats of losing WrestleMania and thus serious revenue meant most plumped for Survivor Series.
The concept of the show was simple: teams of 4 or 5 men or women going head to head in an elimination tag match, with the winning team that which eliminated all of the opposition. This initial premise faded away somewhat through the 90s, to the point where modern Survivor Series events would have just one or two so-called 'Traditional Survivor Series Elimination Matches'.
