Ex-WWE Star Says Vince McMahon Wanted A "Tag-Team Wedding" On Raw
Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo weren't WWE boss Vince McMahon's first choice.
WWE infamously promoted a wedding angle involving Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo on the 12 September 2002 episode of SmackDown. That publicity stunt was heavily criticised when both characters publicly rubbished the idea that they were in love.
Apparently, Vince McMahon had been pondering this idea for a while.
Scotty 2 Hotty told Chris Jericho's podcast that McMahon approached him backstage in 1998 and asked if he'd be interested in working a wedding segment with then-partner Brian Christopher. Immediately, Hotty started wondering how they could go about things - would fans sh*t on the kayfabe marriage, or would it turn Too Much into huge stars?
He wasn't sure, but it didn't matter anyway. Christopher wasn't keen on working the angle, and he wouldn't budge even when the company tried to talk him round. Eventually, the "life partners" idea gave way to something else, and the combo turned into Too Cool.
That change led to a wildly successful run that Hotty remains grateful for. Even so, he wonders what it might've been like to pull the trigger on a tag-team wedding four years before Billy & Chuck.
