Deciding to shockingly pull the trigger on a long-time top babyface as your new biggest bad in the company will never not be a hugely fascinating move.

And when fans were done scraping pieces of their minds back off the floor after the unbelievable conclusion to WrestleMania X-Seven, even those who immediately felt turning the iconic 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin fully heel was a foolish call were at least a little bit curious about what the future held for the baddest S.O.B. in the business.

In the weeks and months that followed Austin toppling The Rock with a little help from the devil himself, though, it was painfully obvious that no matter how hard this 'Texas Rattlesnake' tried - attacking Jim Ross, swerving fans with fake face turns, and battering women with steel chairs - he was never going to be entirely rejected.

Outside of a few moments of backstage comedy gold opposite Kurt Angle, the unstable menace's walk on the dark side ultimately became one of the biggest failures in company history.

And as the also hugely disappointing storyline flop that was the Invasion finally reached its end at Survivor Series 2001, WWE wisely wrapped up the villainous Austin experiment, too.

But the damage had already been done.
