CM Punk couldn't stand what John Cena stood for in WWE, and Triple H knew why.

CM Punk "hated" everything that John Cena stood for, at least according to former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr.

Prinze Jr, speaking via his 'Wrestling With Freddie' podcast, said Triple H once also explained exactly why Punk had such a problem with Cena's role in the company - Hunter told Freddie there was only heat "because he knows if he was in that same spot, he would act the exact same way".

Interesting.

Prinze Jr likened that bad taste in Punk's mouth to what's going on today behind the scenes in AEW. The actor-come-writer doesn't think it's a coincidence that Punk is "basically acting the way John Cena did back then", and he can't get Triple H's words out of his head.

To him, 'The Game' was absolutely spot on with his assessment. Punk's "hatred" for Cena's character stemmed from his own desires to be the top guy in WWE. It became clear to him that he could never achieve that though, because Vince McMahon and his corporate juggernaut favoured John's persona.

In another curious moment, Freddie also added that Punk "wasn't loved at WWE".
