Though linked with Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2021, Cena doesn't know when he's coming back to WWE.

John Cena has said that while he'll definitely return to WWE in the future and is looking forward to his next match, he doesn't know when this will happen.

The 16-time World Champion was asked about going back to wrestling during an appearance on yesterday's episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. When Fallon mentioned the rumours, Cena kept it simple:-

"Those rumours are true. I'll definitely be returning to WWE, I just don't know when."

Fallon then produced a print of a teasing Instagram post of the WWE logo Cena made back in May. On this, and the speculation that arose from it, Cena said the following:-

"I posted that back in May. I was feeling rather nostalgic about WWE and I just wanted to post the logo, and uhh... some people took it as I was returning immediately, which, that's not the case, but I haven't had my last match and I can't wait to have my next one."

The F9 star was then asked about his acting career which, as is the case with Dwayne Johnson, acts as a barrier to him wrestling again:-

"All these opportunities have led to more opportunities. I've said before, once you do one of these things the insurance doesn't let you go wrestle on the weekends, so we'll see what happens."

Although WWE is yet to make anything official, Cena has been linked to a high-profile match with Universal Champion Roman Reigns at SummerSlam 2021 (21 August). It should be noted that if this was in the works, and Cena had agreed to the bout, it's highly unlikely that he'd spoil it on live television.

The 44-year-old last "wrestled" for WWE at WrestleMania 36 in spring 2020, when he worked Bray Wyatt's 'Fiend' in a cinematic Firefly Fun House match. His last conventional bout was a Universal Title contendership four-way with Finn Balor, Baron Corbin, and Drew McIntyre on the 14 January 2019 episode of Raw.
