John Cena Vs. AJ Styles Signed For WWE Royal Rumble 2016
WWE World Championship on the line in major battle.
John Cena made a triumphant return to Smackdown Live by announcing that he was challenging the winner of the show's triple threat WWE World Championship main event to a title bout at the Royal Rumble. When AJ Styles retained his belt over Baron Corbin and Dean Ambrose, it set the stage for the next chapter in the feud between the two superstars.
The issues between Cena and Styles began on Memorial Day, when John Cena returned to Raw only to be assaulted by "The Phenomenal One" and The Club. In their subsequent face-off at Money in the Bank, Styles went back on his word that their encounter would be an even match, capitalizing on interference from The Club to win. Styles would then beat Cena cleanly in a classic match at SummerSlam, and finally pin him a third time in a triple threat WWE World Championship match at No Mercy also involving Dean Ambrose.
The WWE World Championship match joins WWE Universal Champion Kevin Owens versus Roman Reigns and the 30-Man Royal Rumble match (with announced participants Goldberg and Brock Lesnar) for the January 29 Pay-Per-View event.
